    2006 . . . @ The Brooklyn Circus

Originally posted on December 30, 2006 with 1 Comment

Wow! The year is at its end… To think we launched The Brooklyn Circus only 322 days ago (on February 11th of this year to be exact). With nothing but two partners (from the previous venture) parting ways, pure passion, a love for street culture, an honest dream, and a sneaker closet to begin our voyage. Some respectful relationships, a few thousand dollars and a chunk of overdue commercial rent later; we kept on trucking with our veteran A/C on it’s last leg, and a contractor who was always late and made a side hustle off of selling DVD’s to everyone who came within a 6 foot radius of him.

We had no idea that we would touch the lives of so many people, receive calls from those we dreamed of working with, and receive features and mentions from many a magazine. Never did we think we’d meet and make friends in so many places and be the happiest kids on the block. Yep! Life has a way of making things better when you persevere and dare to dream. We made lemonade from lemons and we iced some up for next year, yep!

Of course there are no roads without bumps, no tracks without hurdles. Similarly there is no industry without its share of charlatans, psuedo-artists, fakes and snakes, wannabees, hype-monsters and star hopefuls with no commitment to the game.

The lows of it all…The folks who receive your payment and ship bull-ish garment, the Myspace emails with line sheets that should be burned, the visits from dudes who are only interested in being famous and think a few t -shirts, a blog and a cool boutique are what its all about.

Street culture would not be street if you didn’t have your share of brands who think they are the hottest thing out the gate, while producing pure non-sense. It’s the same as the streets that accept modern day Hip Hop – where Jim Jones thinks he can go after Jay-Z – really just preposterous. Comparable to Nas saying Hip Hop is dead and rappers with dead lyrics, no style and manufactured swagger get upset. No different!

Its an endless myriad of brands hating on other brands, stores spitting fire and manufacturers spending more time making up stories of why they are late than actually making garments. Deals going bad, good brands going unnoticed and bad brands selling lots of units. There seems to be no respite…

So as freshmen in the game it’s only right that we speak our point of view from the bottom up, years from now they’ll either say, “These young dudes were right” or “They were young – they knew no better” We say – Yep! To all of the above!

At any rate, we’ve gathered a few pics that will have you flashing back to what seems to be a lot longer than 322 days since The Brooklyn Circus came to town… So sit back and enjoy, because despite it all – we definitely have!
Happy New Year From The Brooklyn Circus family. . .

James Brown x The Brooklyn Circus

To all the folks that are going to put a James Brown tribute t-shirt in their lines next season, I hope you at least went to pay your last respect to The God Father of Soul. I was also hopping to see all the Hip hop producers, many of whom have sampled the ish out of James Brown. As for The Brooklyn Circus, my brother in law would kill me, if I did not go and pay my last respects to James Brown right in our backyard. Now on to a brief synopsis of the event: The lines, the lines, the long lines for blocks, ahh man I’ve never witnessed anything like this in my entire life. Al agreed and he is as old as James Brown.
